Thrifty mum gets quoted £200 for rainbow wallpaper for her daughter’s room so sorts it herself for a tenner

GETTING ready for a new baby is exciting, but as the due date looms you realise just how much you have to do, and with that often come some hefty bills.

Kirsty Williams had set her heart on a rainbow-themed nursery for her little girl, but when she saw her dream wallpaper would set her back more than £200, she decided to give it a go herself.

Instead, thrifty Kirsty, who is expecting her second child in June, put her handy work to the test and swapped the pricey wall decor for her own hand-painted masterpiece.

And the end result is better than she’d ever imagined.

Kirsty took to Facebook to reveal the design, which cost her as little as £10.

Posting in the DIY On A Budget Official Facebook group, the chuffed mum revealed what could be done with a little creativity and a few pots of paint.

She said: “I saw wallpaper that was over £200 for a giant rainbow on the wall… so I decided I would free hand draw it on myself and used some tester paint pots from B&Q.

“The whole thing cost me under £10 and I’m so pleased with the result. Now to finish the rest of the room.”

The pictures showed the nursery, with Kirsty’s hand-drawn mural front-and-centre and a lilac plush chair in one corner with two rainbow themed baskets to match.

Rather than using the traditional colours of the rainbow,  the crafty mum used a selection of soft, pastel hues to create a dreamy space for her baby girl.

In one photo, the soon to be mum-of-two captured the names of the paint pots she’d used, while the other two pictures showed off what she was able to do with them.

After posting to Facebook, Kirsty was inundated with positive remarks with words such as "beautiful" and "perfect" being used

She said: “The colour of the room is Egyptian Cotton. I’ve put a picture of the six tester paints I used to do the rainbow from B&Q . The baskets are from Dunelm mill and the chair is Homebase.”

It seems we aren’t the only ones completely and utterly obsessed with the mum’s new nursery because other members of the group described the room as “beautiful”, ” amazing” and “perfect”

One person even said: “You have inspired me!! Thank you!!”

While another said: “I love this! It’s so much more personal and special for your baby anyway! I like the light shade, it reminds me of raindrops and the rainbow comes after the storm. Beautiful and best of luck too.”

The post has attracted a huge 12,000 likes, but there’s little wonder why.

The room, it seems, is fit for a queen – or the little princess who’ll soon be calling it home.
