Universities already contribute a whopping 21 per cent of a lecturer’s salary towards pensions.

But academics are fuming that they have been asked to increase theirs from 8 per cent to 9.6 per cent.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) at 74 universities are walking out for 14 days in February and March.

The Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) said it is “dismayed” by “damaging strike action”.

University of Southampton president and vice-chancellor Professor Mark Smith, and chairman the UCEA, said: “We are very sorry for the impact industrial action has on students’ study.”
