People who live in homes in council tax bands A to D are eligible for the one-off pay out, which does not have to be paid back.

The government said around 80% of households will benefit from the freebie as energy bills have soared.

Rebates have already started to land in some people’s bank accounts, but the payment schedule varies across the country.

Those who pay their council tax bills by direct debit are getting the cash first, as the local authority already has their bank account details.

If you pay using a different method, you will be invited to apply at a later date.

Several councils have said they will start processing the refunds next week, meaning thousands will get the £150 pay out from Monday.

People who live in Oldham will get their payment by the end of next week, the town’s local paper reported, and thousands have already received the £150.

St Helen’s Council has delayed the processing of payments from May 13 to May 16, meaning money should start being received from Monday.

South Tyneside council has invited households who don’t pay by direct debit to apply for the rebate from Monday.

If you paid council tax by direct debit on or before May 3, you should get the payment automatically.

Meanwhile, Lancaster City Council began making the payments yesterday (May 13), meaning residents will likely to continue to receive the cash next week.

If you’re not automatically eligible for the council tax rebate but you still need help, you can apply.

Local authorities have been given a pot of cash to help residents who don’t live in the eligible council tax bands but are in need of support.
