The modular designs can be built from scratch and put up on site in just over a week. Experts say the homes will be safer, more attractive and environmentally friendly.

They can have around 80 per cent fewer defects and heating bills are likely to be up to 70 per cent lower. The Government is struggling to hit its target of building 300,000 new homes a year.

Housing Minister Esther McVey yesterday said the move could make Britain a global leader in housing standards.

She told The Sun on Sunday: “We are still around 80,000 homes a year short of our building target but there is an answer within our grasp.

“There will always be a place for traditionally build homes but to reach that target we are going to have to speed up the delivery of homes built using modern methods.

“The benefits are clear. Some modular homes can be built in a factory over a week and assembled on site in a day.”

Ms McVey’s drive will be backed by an ambitious plan to turn the North into a new capital of construction for modern house-building techniques.

She added: “We must invest in this new technology. The benefits are clear.

“If we get this right it could be worth an estimated £40billion — a new post-Brexit industry.

“For too long, demand has outstripped supply and this must be addressed if we are to ensure the next generation can realise the dream of home ownership.”
