Natalie Portman is returning to the MCU as Jane Foster in the upcoming blockbuster Thor: Love and Thunder.

And the actress could have quite an emotional storyline to face.

Director Taika Waititi has revealed that Thor: Love and Thunder could feature a storyline where Jane battles breast cancer.

The comic books Waititi is following for the movie see Thor losing his ability to wield his hammer Mjolnir – thus losing his title as God of Thunder.

Jane is diagnosed with breast cancer, and a mystery women picks up Mjolnir and calls herself the Mighty Thor.

However, it turns out the new Thor and Jane are the same women – with her human form battling cancer while her superhero self is rid of the disease.

And Taika, 44, is keen to explore this storyline.

Speaking to Variety, the Thor: Ragnarok director said: ‘I think that’s a really powerful part of the books.

‘I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally I really love that storyline. But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen.’

The Kiwi star added: ‘We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline. These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes.

‘Like, “Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.”‘

The MCU is known for switching Marvel comic storylines up when taking them to the big screen, so we’ll have to wait and see whether the cancer plot makes it.

Natalie’s return to the MCU was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con in July, with the 38-year-old wielding Mjolnir.

However, she’s not just the ‘female Thor’, as Chris Hemsworth will still play the OG hero.

Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson will return as Valkyrie – who will be the first out LGBTQ+ superhero in the MCU.

Thor: Love and Thunder is slated for release on 5 November 2021.
