Thomas Vinterberg breaks down at Oscars 2021 after 'devastating' tribute to late daughter

Oscar winning Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, 51, paid a touching tribute to his late daughter Ida, in a highly emotional speech after winning the Best International Feature accolade for his movie, Another Round. Ida, who was 19 at the time, tragically died in a car accident in 2019 just days into production, and was set to have a role in the film.

“We wanted to make a film that celebrates life,” Vinterberg said, “and four days into shooting, an accident took my daughter away.

“We miss her. I love her.”

According to the filmmaker, she was “blown away with excitement” upon reading the script months earlier.

During his speech that fans labelled “devastating”, Vinterberg remembered: “She was glowing with excitement, she loved this and she felt seen by this and she was supposed to be in this.

Vinterberg has previously spoken about how making the film helped him deal with the grief of Ida, admitted he felt there was a “higher purpose”.
