Thomas The Tank Engine narrator Michael Angelis has died.

The actor, who also starred in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, died at his home, with his agent confirming the sad news.

Michael narrated the show for 13 series, taking over from Ringo Starr in 1991.

He was also well known for his roles as Arnie in September Song, Martin Niarchos in GBH, Lucien Boswell in The Liver Birds and as Mickey Startup in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.

The actor was married to Coronation Street star Helen Worth (Gail Platt) from 1991 to 2001, before marrying Jennifer Khalastchi, who he is survived by.

With a career that spanned decades, Michael’s first credited roles were in TV series The Scobie Man and Thirty-Minute Theatre in 1972, while he also made an appearance in Coronation Street the same year.

His final role was as the narrator in The Best of Thomas & Friends Clips in the US, from 2011 to 2019.

Fans and friends of the star have been paying tribute, with one writing on Twitter: ‘Absolutely devastating. I can’t even begin to fathom this. What a tremendous loss. Heaven just gained an angel.’

‘It breaks my heart to hear that the legendary Michael Angelis has passed away,’ another said.

‘However his legacy will live on within the hearts of many Thomas fans. He shaped so many peoples childhoods and gave people so many laughs. Godspeed Michael. Rest In Peace.’

One more wrote: ‘Can’t believe that Michael Angelis has passed away, the news is still sinking in.

‘This man brought joy to many generations of children and adults, I hope that his memory will always live on – a great actor and a charming storyteller. We will miss you Michael, rest in peace.’
