This is why Tranexamic Acid is the breakthrough skincare ingredient for the glowiest skin ever

Be it hyaluronic, salicylic, mandelic or glycolic, skincare acids are pretty amazing, right? They can refresh, exfoliate and regenerate skin as well as controlling oil production and fighting off wrinkles.

And now, there’s another amazing acid on our radar. Meet Tranexamic Acid; the one-stop shop for treating pigmentation and dark spots, brightening the skin with unprecedented efficacy. We’ve called in Dr. Tiina Meder, cosmetic dermatologist, to decode skincare’s latest wonder ingredient…

Which skin concerns does it primarily treat?

“Tranexamic acid is used for melasma (dark spots) treatment, including pregnancy melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It is safe to use for all skin types and colours.”

Can it treat existing pigmentation? Or does it mainly work to prevent future pigmentation?

“Yes, tranexamic acid can treat existing pigmentation effectively and products containing the ingredient are recommended for preventing post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH), which can be common side effect of laser treatments.”

But how exactly does it work?

Tranexamic acid provides a powerful and specific anti-inflammatory action, inhibiting the tyrosinase synthesis in melanocytes. At the same time it blocks the transfer of pigment from melanocytes to keratinocytes in the epidermis. Tranexamic acid also calms the skin and helps restore the skin barrier.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Actually, there are no registered side effects when using tranexamic acid topically. Side effects only come into play when using tranexamic acid as an oral treatment.

Does it make skin more sensitive to sun?

“Absolutely not. In fact, tranexamic acid decreases the skin’s sensitivity to UV – this is why he ingredient is so popular in Asia and India.”
