This groundbreaking anti-pollution shampoo depollutes rivers as it washes down your plughole

Given our growing affinity for products that don’t hurt the planet, brands have been looking more intently than ever at their ingredients lists.

We now know that the products we’ve been inadvertently washing down our plug holes for years – microbeads (now banned), UV filters and common cosmetic toxins – have all played a part in polluting our waterways and oceans.

It’s a problem for the generation of consumers growing increasingly sustainably-minded, since finding products that deliver on performance and feel gratifying to use – while crucially delivering on their planet-friendly promises – are tricky to come by.

But scientists have been innovating to find a solution, identifying ingredients that depollute and detoxify as they make their way down our drains.

In fact, the star ingredient of Klorane’s new anti-pollution shampoo and conditioner, aquatic mint, was first discovered by a French professor, working with the brand to depollute rivers that had been contaminated with heavy metals.

On examination, the wetland plant, which naturally grows near ponds, streams and rivers, was found to contain unusually high concentrations of antioxidants (which work to fight against damaging free radicals found in metals, toxins and pollution). When placed in rivers, it was shown to completely decontaminate them and restore the purity of the water – an incredible breakthrough for our environment.

What does this mean for your shower? Well, you can be sure that you’re sending more than good vibes down the pipes. In fact, detoxifiers like aquatic mint can go some way in helping to undo some of the damage we’ve already caused.

And, of course, its de-polluting properties extend to our hair too, where it works in much the same way, nixing damaging free radicals from pollution particles as they land in our strands. Since pollution is a major cause of dull, lacklustre hair and greasy roots, it’s a smart choice for restoring shine, building body and leaving your hair minty fresh.
