This beach resort in Mauritius left me feeling more revitalised than ever

You know the drill: You train like crazy to get in shape for the annual beach jaunt and then from the minute you arrive, you are faced with the breakfast buffet of dreams and pina coladas by the gallon, undoing all your hard work. Not so at Long Island Beach Resort, Mauritius.

With fitness classes, a climbing wall, water sports and a separate lap pool for serious swimmers your daily routine will stay safely in tact and so will your abs! With healthy food options, top notch fitness instructors and detox therapies on tap, you will be brimming over with wellness by the time you leave.

Our first dip into the fitness offering involved the brilliant Cecile Jeanson and Akwa Aktiv. Cecile is an ex-Olympic swimmer who suffered from a debilitating back condition mid career. She got herself back to full fitness having been told she might not walk again using her own design pool-based system Akwa Aktiv. Weightless and strong, this is a winner for anyone and a must-do at Long Beach Island.

Mauritius is a golfer’s paradise and the best of the best has to be Ile aux Cerfs (yes, that does mean island of deer. The deer moved out many years ago and the golf moved in!).

Day two took us to a remote island just a short boat ride from Long Island Beach Resort and home to one of the World’s most ‘grammable golf courses. A quick lesson on the driving range with club professional, a round of golf on the perfectly manicured tropical course of dreams and then a bbq lobster lunch on the island’s private beach restaurant. Could we be more relaxed?

We finished the day with a trip highlight: a sunset yoga session with Raj. Stretching and breathing to the sounds of the ocean.

On day three we were taken to the local food market with hundreds of farmers selling their produce. Gram-ready, the colours and smells were intense. Hotel Chef Ritesh picked out some of the island’s flavour-filled produce and then – with our expert help – whipped up a couple of Mauritian lunch classics back at the resort.

After a rum cocktail in Shores each night, we systematically ticked off all of the 6 restaurants. You name it, they have it. Chinese, Italian, British and, of course, traditional Mauritian.

Our favourite? It had to be Hasu, the super sophisticated Japanese. The flavours were sharp and fresh, the dishes refined and light. The salmon sashimi was melt-in-the-mouth perfection; definitely book this one for date night.

With the sand between our toes and cruising from fresh juice to sun lounger to healthy cocktail to 5* restaurant meant we were pretty relaxed at this point so one last day in Le Cinq Mondes Spa and Wellness Retreat helped any last trace of real-life stress totally disappear.

The spa offers wellness packages focusing on different styles such as Ayurvedic and Taoist and you can fit the packages into your stay with daily treatments.

We loved what they call the “detox retreat” which includes daily turmeric lattes and sleep-inducing pillow spray delivered to your door just before bed. Perfect for balancing out those incredible cocktails – it’s all about the detox/retox here. By the end of our 4 day stay we were totally sunned and revived. I’ve never felt better.

Prices at Long Beach Mauritius start from £224 per room per night, based on two sharing a room on a half-board basis.
