Zinedine Zidane was forced to substitute Thibaut Courtois at half-time during Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw against Club Brugge as the Belgian was suffering from a stomach problem.

Madrid found themselves two goals down by half time following a double from Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis.

Courtois has been heavily criticised for his failure to do better for both of Dennis’ goals, especially the first as the Brugge striker completely miscontrolled the ball but it managed to trickle past the Madrid goalkeeper.

Many were surprised to see Courtois fail to emerge after the half-time break as he was replaced by Alphonse Areola.

But Madrid confirmed after the match that Courtois was suffering from sickness and was unable to continue.

Reports have claimed that Courtois had been suffering from illness earlier on in the day but he was not pulled out of the match.

Second-half goals from Sergio Ramos and Casemiro rescued a draw for Madrid, who have failed to win either one of their opening two Champions League group games for the first time in history.

‘It’s a bad result, but the reaction was good. I can’t be happy with the first half,’ Zidane said after the match.

‘We’ve never had a 45 minutes like that, but I’ll take the reaction. At the end of the day I’m not happy with one point – we should have had three – but I’m happy with the reaction.

‘You’ve seen the goal we gave away, it was a bit of a joke.

‘It’s not that we started badly but then we didn’t concentrate when the opposition were able to hurt us.

‘When they score first they grow in confidence, we fell away a bit and the second goal happened.

‘In the end I’d rather think about the second 45. We can’t be happy, but you need to always think about the positive.’
