Thiago Silva has taken responsibility for his mistake against West Brom on Saturday and promised Chelsea fans he – and the team – will bounce back from their disastrous defensive showing.

The west Londoners salvaged a point in a 3-3 draw at the Hawthorns after an error-riddled first half, with the home side three goals up inside the first half hour.

Silva was handed his Premier League debut for the game, and given the captaincy, though he endured a difficult match and was at fault for the Baggies’ second goal.

The Brazilian centre-back was the deepest of Chelsea’s defenders and took a heavy touch which Callum Robinson jumped on, with the striker bursting through on goal and slotting past Willy Caballero.

Silva, who was playing in the Champions League final only last month, was quick to front up for his mistake and vowed to up his game in the future, insisting to Chelsea fans that they will see his best form.

Writing on Instagram, Silva said: ‘There are days when unfortunately hard work doesn’t pay off the way we expected.

‘I am upset, but I take responsibility for the mistake I made, as I always did. As difficult as it may be, we have to get over this and move on.

‘I want to thank my teammates and the entire staff for their continuous support since I joined Chelsea FC. I am really grateful of that support.

‘I promise to all of you that I will give everything I have on the pitch, putting all my energy and commitment into the games to come.’

Despite conceding three times in the first half Chelsea fought back to secure a point with Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi both getting on the scoresheet before Tammy Abraham netted the leveller in stoppage time.
