‘They’ve cocked it up’ – Gary Neville's furious rant at Man Utd board after Newcastle loss

Gary Neville believes Manchester United are “getting the pain they deserve for poor decisions at board level” after a demoralising 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.

Matty Longstaff got the only goal of the game in what was otherwise a drab affair on Tyneside, with United fans once again leaving a match frustrated and bitterly disappointed.

The result now leaves them 12th in the table and just two points above the relegation zone having won just two of their opening eight games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has endured something of an injury crisis with six first-team players missing for the match against Newcastle, including the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

But Neville was not impressed by the depth of the squad available to Solskjaer, taking aim at poor recruitment over the past few years.

“They’ve cocked it up,” he said on Sky Sports, referring to United’s board.

“They’re responsible for this.

“Poor recruitment, poor selection of managers and then going with them and pulling off them.

“Van Gaal won the FA Cup and then they sacked him.

“Jose Mourinho, they sacked him after two-and-a-half-years when they had given him a contract six months before.

“So they’ve pulled off managers in terms of what would be the threat of it.

“They’ve gone for completely differently styles of managers in Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

“They’ve now gone with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who’s taken the club in a completely different direction again.

“If you change direction as a board every two years and invest £250million along the way in each manager, you’re going to have big problems.

“Manchester United are basically now getting the pain they deserve for poor decisions at board level.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to make sure that the clean up job he’s doing – which needs to be done at this football club for the mess that’s gone before him – he needs to make sure that he is somebody that gets the opportunity to spend £250million that the others have had to spend.”
