These are the best blushers for darker skin

Blusher is a tricky business. Women with darker skin often find that the lack of pigmentation and chalky texture isn’t compatible with their skin.

Split into two subsections of texture, we’re used to seeing either a powder blush or a cream blush, which both work differently in terms of application. Powder is typically applied with a blusher brush and cream can be applied by using your fingers or with a brush.

We spoke to makeup artist and brand spokesperson for Bare Minerals, SJ Froom, to glean her best tips when it comes to all things blush.

“It’s all about skin that’s clean, bright and polished with a pop of blush on the apples of the cheeks to lift the face and create natural definition that shapes your cheekbones,” she said.

“Powder blusher work beautifully over a mineral powder foundation or finishing powder; this way the pigments give an airbrushed finish which naturally blurs imperfections. I love powder blush as it applies seamlessly to the skin, you can’t see where the colour starts or stops. For liquids and creams its best to lightly blend straight onto of tinted moisturiser or liquid foundation before powder as this will give a fresh dewy finish with added luminosity.”

Less is more with blusher generally; start small and build it up where needed. Apply your blusher right onto the centre of the apple of the cheek and blend in circular motions, you can always add slightly more and sweep the colour up very gently towards the temples.

To find the right shade for your skin tone, SJ says if you have olive skin, go for corals and peaches. If you are more of a cooler undertone, go for pinks; and for darker skins mauve is beautiful. “I like to mix things up and will sometimes layer different blushers and create my own shade,” she adds.
