These are the best beauty looks from the Oscars red carpet

We’ve marvelled at all the fashion from the Oscars red carpet – now it’s time to take a closer look.

No, not at hemlines or stitching, or even trying to catch out someone’s not-so-gracious loser face.

We’re talking about hair and makeup – the underrated part of any great red carpet look that can be the deciding factor between whether an outfit works or looks an absolute mess.

There weren’t any beauty catastrophes at this year’s Academy Awards (good for the celebs, not so fun for us), but we can all take notes from some of the best looks appearing on the red carpet on the night.

Behold our pick of the most excellent faces there.

Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o always nails it when it comes to red carpets, in both fashion and beauty stakes.

But this look is on another level. We love the star’s glowing skin, the deep, slightly orangey red on the lip, and that glorious crown of hair on top.

The flash of glitter on the eyes ties in perfectly with the gown. Ten out of ten.

Billie Eilish

Sure, the sideswept fringe may bring back not-so-fond memories of our teenage emo years, but once you get past that, this look is a delight.

Note the flicked out ends of the hair for a retro finish, the soft pop of blush on the cheeks, and a your-lips-but-better shade.

The cat eye is so delicate it veers away from looking to sharp or heavy, and the overall result is dreamily retro.

Stephanie Beatriz

Classic for a reason (Picture: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic)

You really can’t go wrong with a red lip, a simple smoked-out eye, and a centre-parted updo.

Zoe Kravitz

Another old school hollywood look, this time drawing major inspiration from Audrey Hepburn in the form of a short fringe, thick brows, and a teeny bit of liner.

You really can’t go wrong. And Zoe’s perfect face doesn’t hurt.

Emilia Jones

The reason this works so well: its simplicity.

And the good news for us? It’s super easy to recreate this look at home, whether you’re heading on a night out or feel like being extra fancy the next time you pop to Aldi.

Simply smooth the hair with a blow dry, part down the middle, grab a triangle of hair from the front and keep this separate as you brush and slick the rest back into a high bun.

Go pared back on the makeup, as Emilia’s done here, to keep the finish fresh.

Zendaya

A great lipgloss, too (Picture: AFP via Getty Images)

Look, we’ll be honest: Zendaya’s makeup for the Oscars isn’t that exciting. She’s absolutely stunning, and her makeup lets that shine through.

What we are jazzed about, however, is the casual, effortless vibe and soft texture of her slightly mussed updo.

It’s very ‘I don’t care, I just threw my hair up’, but likely took ages to perfect. Anyway, we love it.

Lily James

A modern bombshell (Picture: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic)

Lily James’ dress gave a sesne of old-school bombshells – and her hair and makeup marries up to this vision perfectly.

The blowdry is perfection, and the makeup is subtle but designed to up the sex factor.

We quite need to find out what lipstick she’s wearing here.

Chloe Bailey

Fun, glam, sparkly – isn’t that what we all want from a red carpet look? Chloe Bailey delivered the goods.

We’re fans of everything about this look.

The sideswept hair, the perfectly matched lip colour with a subtle gloss, the winged out eyeliner, the healthy-looking skin, and, of course, the gold shimmer on the inner corners of the eye.

Another trick that’s easy to copy – just grab a sparkly liner and do a (gentle) scribble, or dip a brush into a shimmery gel or cream then dab.
