Theresa May’s supporters ‘accuse rebels Brexiteers of being sexist to PM’

THERESA May’s supporters have accused rebel Brexiteers of being sexist by trying to kick her out.

The Prime Minister’s allies are saying efforts to boot her out of No10 at such a critical time wouldn’t be happening if the PM were a man.

Later today she’s expected to address her MPs at the backbench 1922 committee just before MPs vote on what they think should happen next for Brexit.

But loyal Tories have attacked efforts from the ERG to remove her from officer, saying “the whole thing has a whiff of misogyny about it”.

One fuming female minister told the i newspaper: “They wouldn’t be demanding she set out her departure date if the Prime Minister were a man.

“They say [their dislike of the Brexit deal] is about principle but if they are prepared to back it in exchange for her quitting where is the principle in that?”

Foreign Office minister Mark Field warned earlier this week it would “not be a great look for my party” if a second female PM was ousted over Europe.

Margaret Thatcher was kicked out over a long battle with her own MPs over Europe which ripped her party apart.

Last year Tories argued the opposite in a WhatsApp chat last year.

Steve Double said the PM shouldn’t be kept in No1o “because she’s a woman”.

He said: “If the only reason we shouldn’t oust the PM is because she’s a woman, but if it was a man it would be OK – that’s feminism gone bonkers.”

Nadine Dorries said in the WhatsApp group: “I am pointing out just a smigdin of the s**t that will be heaped upon us if TM is ousted by male MPs.”

Senior Tories will today urge the PM to say today that she will quit within weeks over the Brexit mess.

The 1922 Committee boss held a one-on-one meeting with Mrs May in No10 yesterday which all her aides were excluded from, The Sun revealed today.

During it, Sir Graham told her it is now the overwhelming view of Tory MPs that she lay out a timetable to go before the summer.

Senior figures hope that the PM will be able to secure vital support for her Brexit deal that will allow it to pass – in exchange for promising she’ll step down this year.

Downing Street will only put her deal back to the Commons if they think there’s enough support for it to pass.

Jacob Rees-Mogg WILL back Brexit deal – but only if rebellious DUP come round too
