Theresa May wades into Tory leadership drug row – and opens up over own past

The embattled Prime Minister was asked whether she had dabbled in cocaine, cannabis or opium like potential successors to her role Michael Gove, Andrea Leadsom or Rory Stewart. And, given her previous “fields of wheat” answer when asked to name the craziest thing she did as a youngster, her response comes as no surprise. A statement from her official spokesman confirmed “Theresa May has never taken any illegal drugs”, when asked by The Times.

Despite the answer being a tad on the dull side, it did plunge social media into a frenzy with an array of colourful responses from Twitter users.

One, referring to her infamous interview, said: “So she was running through that wheat field sober?”

Another, also referring to the interview, joked: “She’s done lines of wheat though.”

Another commenter said: “Oh come on now. You seriously expect us to believe she didn’t have one crafty packet of salt and vinegar crisps during Lent?”

A fourth Twitter user referred to her lovable Abba boogie on stage.

He joked: “That ‘Dancing Queen’ routine would indicate otherwise.”

Leadership contender Mr Gove has faced a wave of scrutiny over his drug confession despite launching his campaign with an impassioned speech today.

In his typical savage style however, he managed to deter attention from his drug past and onto fellow contender Boris Johnson, jokingly urging him not to “pull out” of the race after his first doomed bid for PM in 2016.

Speeches and pledges have come from an array of contenders today, including Jeremy Hunt, Dominic Raab and Esther McVey.

Mr Johnson will speak tomorrow – a day after the entries for the battle have closed.

The former Foreign Secretary, who famously quit his role over Mrs May’s controversial Chequers deal with the EU, opened up about his own past.

He once said on panel show Have I Got News For You: “I think I was once given cocaine, but I sneezed and so it did not go up my nose.

“In fact, I may have been doing icing sugar.”

However, he did tell GQ magazine in 2007 that he had tried cocaine and cannabis at university, adding it “achieved no pharmacological, psychotropic or any other effect on me whatsoever”.

Mr Hunt also admitted to trying cannabis once.

He told The Times: “I think I had a cannabis lassi when I went backpacking through India”.

He added: “That is almost as naughty as wheat fields.”

In an interview last year, Mrs May was ridiculed for saying the naughtiest thing she had ever done was run through fields of wheat.
