The Witcher season 2 confirmed by Netflix

The Witcher season 2 is a spell that’s already being woven over at Netflix over a month before the arrival of season 1!

The second season of Netflix’s The Witcher has been officially confirmed, set to manifest with an 8-episode run, which matches the number of episodes for the show’s December-premiering inaugural season. Production on season 2 will commence in London in early 2020, with a premiere set for autumn 2021. Additionally, the show’s main cast trio – Henry Cavill (Mission Impossible – Fallout, Man of Steel) as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) as Yennefer and Freya Allan (The Third Day, Into the Badlands) as Ciri – are set to return.

Seemingly indicative of Netflix’s retention of The Witcher‘s key creative personnel, season 1 showrunner (and the show’s credited creator,) Lauren S. Hissrich enthusiastically announced the season 2 renewal, bestowing praise on the cast and crew while teasing the further adventures of the show’s main trio.

Netflix’s early order for The Witcher season 2 arrives at an interesting, potentially bellwether time in the ever-escalating streaming wars, just a day after Disney’s launch of a potentially existential threat of a competitor in the Mouse House’s embarrassment-of-IP-riches streaming platform, Disney+. Indeed, while the reputed spendthrift Netflix recently engaged in a bit of belt-tightening with a spate of series cancellations (The OA, Santa Clarita Diet, Designated Survivor, Chambers, et al), its confidence in The Witcher – a dark fantasy series based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski and the popular series of video games it’s spawned – has been apparent even from the earliest stages of production.

Hissrich, who’s worked extensively with Netflix as an executive producer on TV offerings The Umbrella Academy, Daredevil and The Defenders, executive-produces The Witcher alongside Tomek Baginski, Jason F. Brown, Steve Gaub, Sean Daniel, Jarosław Sawko and Mike Ostrowski.

While the autumn 2021 premiere of The Witcher Season 2 is a long way from now, the wait until the arrival of the show’s first season is, thankfully, a shorter one, with its arrival on Netflix scheduled for December 20. – Of course, we’ll keep you updated right here on the second season developments as they occur!
