The Washington Post launches new dedicated gaming section, Launcher

The Washington Post is launching an all-new vertical dedicated to video games and esports. Entitled Launcher, the new section – which go live on October 15th, 2019 – will feature “insightful analysis into the people, companies, teams and trends that comprise an industry becoming more prevalent in society every day”.

Staff announced so far include Mike Hume, who’ll be taking up the editor position, along with writers Gene Park, Elise Favis, and Mikhail Klimentov. Jhaan Elker and Joe Moore join as video producer and art director respectively.

A press release says the site will feature “stories about the ways influential voices and events are pushing gaming into the forefront of our culture, updates on the latest video gaming trends, such as streaming, in-game economics and the expansion of esports leagues; big-picture coverage of competitive gaming’s top leagues and events; tips and tricks from pro gamers and streamers for titles ranging from Fortnite to Zelda, breakdowns of gameplay updates, tweaks and new designs introduced to popular titles; and reviews of the biggest titles and spotlights on indie offerings”.

“Gaming has become deeply ingrained in our social fabric, significantly impacting industries across sports, tech, business and pop culture, and we are uniquely positioned to cover this burgeoning industry,” said Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, managing editor for The Post. “With Launcher, a dedicated team will look at all aspects of gaming, appealing to the casual player and avid esports fan alike.”

In the UK, Network N has revealed The Loadout, a brand new digital outlet “covering the biggest names, games, and news from the world of competitive gaming, esports, and streaming”. Network N’s first big brand launch since PCGamesN in 2012, The Loadout will focus content on “the stories, fans, and culture that surround [gaming], with a focus on original reporting”.
