The Walking Dead: Negan saves his former enemy Daryl as a new character Princess is introduced

Negan saved his former enemy Daryl Dixon’s life on Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead, while a character from the comics makes her long-awaited debut, Princess (Paolo Lazaro).

Daryl (Norman Reedus) had just captured Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in the woods, where he’d run into him while looking for Lydia (Cassidy McClincy) in an old cabin.

To earn Daryl’s trust, Negan told him he’d killed the Whisperers’ leader, Alpha (Samantha Morton), leading him to the stake on which Carol Pelletier (Melissa McBride) placed her head.

But the head had already been removed by Alpha’s second-in-command, Beta (Ryan Hurst), and the men found themselves confronted by three Whisperers with guns.

‘Alpha’s dead because of you,’ one of them told Negan, then surprised him by adding, ‘We kneel to the new Alpha.’

Negan laughed as he recognized his new power, quietly noting that they still had their guns pointing at Daryl, and convincing one man to give him his ‘bad-a** shotgun.’

He savored the moment, pretending for a few minutes that he wanted to kill Daryl, too.

‘Daryl, kneel to the Alpha,’ he ordered him, grinning, as Daryl grudgingly obeyed.

‘Damn! It is starting to get real now, ain’t it?’ Negan crowed, affirming that he liked the power that came with being a Whisperer.

‘You should probably shoot me,’ Daryl snapped, to which Negan replied, ‘Don’t threaten me with a good time.’

He raised his gun and shot the Whisperer who’d given it to him, then slayed the others.

‘Untie me, a**hole,’ Daryl said, holding out his wrists, as Negan chuckled to himself.

The next morning, he and Daryl passed a canteen of water back and forth, and talked.

Negan had already told Daryl that Carol had been the one to set him free from the prison at Alexandria, and that she had ordered Alpha’s death.

‘Not to spin a broken record, but I don’t think she’s coming back,’ Negan said, referring to Carol. ‘You know, I’m not bulls***ing you.’

‘No, I know,’ Daryl conceded, looking down.

Negan admitted again that he really had liked being a Whisperer for a bit.

‘You know, when your people locked me up, I lost everything,’ he shared. ‘Seven years spent staring out that little window, man. It sucked. It got so bad that even my memories had bars painted on them. So when Alpha took me in, I admit it, I liked it. It was nice feeling like I mattered again, like I was respected. But she took it too far. You don’t kill people that don’t deserve it. And you never kill kids.’

‘Is that supposed to make me like you?’ Daryl asked, a small smile playing on his lips.

‘No,’ Negan rejoined, to which Daryl said, ‘Good.’

‘But what about my winning personality?’ Negan asked, as Daryl got up and walked off.

‘What about Carol?’ Negan asked him, following.

At the beginning of the episode, Carol was shown making Negan a deal before freeing him from prison.

‘You’ve been eating whatever s*** we throw your way, hoping that one day they’ll all forget,’ Carol told him. ‘They won’t. Not unless you do something to make them forget. So you bring me Alpha’s head, and that’s what the people will remember you for. I’ll make sure of it.’

After Negan gave her what she wanted, Carol chided him for how long it had taken, to which Negan responded that ‘S*** like that takes time.’

Carol put Alpha’s head on a spike and decided that she wasn’t going back to Alexandria yet.

‘You’re free now, Negan,’ she reminded him. ‘Do whatever the hell you want. Wait, don’t wait. It’s up to you. I need to be alone. And s*** like that takes time.’

As she walked through the woods, Carol began to imagine that she saw Alpha speaking to her.

The Whisperers’ late leader taunted her, saying, ‘You are lost. So was your boy. You sent him away, and he never came back. He died out here, alone and afraid. Just like Sophia.’

‘No taking this head,’ Alpha teased Carol. ‘Unless you take your own. I respect what you did. It was Negan who drew the blade, but it was you who ended me. Like a true Alpha.’

Carol urged her to stop, but Alpha went on, noting that Carol’s quest for vengeance had gotten her excommunicated from her fellow survivors, whom she needed so badly.

Carol walked into a cabin in the woods and tried to pull something off a high shelf, apparently intending to use it for an ocean voyage.

As Alpha shouted epithets at her, the cabin’s roof collapsed, burying Carol beneath debris.

‘My mom used to say everything works out the way it’s supposed to,’ Alpha snickered. ‘It’s finally time. No one’s coming to save you.’

‘No matter what you do, you lose people: Sophia, Lizzie, Mika, Henry, Ezekiel,’ she ticked off. ‘And if you go back, Daryl could be next.’

‘Just look at the flowers, like you’re supposed to,’ she urged Carol, repeating a line that was once used to calm the psychotic child Lizzie Samuels (Brighton Sharbino).

When a zombie walked in, it seemed Carol was doomed, but she found the strength to wrench herself out of the trap she was in and take it down.

‘It’s never too late,’ she sighed, walking back to Alexandria, where Daryl opened the gate.

Alpha’s associate Beta was also undergoing a transformation in the wake of his leader’s death.

Before taking Alpha’s head off the stake, he’d stared at it trying to hear what she had to say.

One of his Whisperers suggested to Beta that he’d become the Alpha, which annoyed him.

‘She can hear you,’ Beta growled at him, telling him to take off his mask and move closer so that he could listen to what Alpha was saying.

He marched the man straight into Alpha’s chomping mouth, and she chewed off his cheek.

Beta then took Alpha’s head off the spike and placed it into a sack before heading into town.

When he got there, a zombie attacked and the man he’d just injured fought it off, but Beta stabbed him from behind.

He hoisted the sack to his ear and followed Alpha’s ‘cue’ to walk into a nearby sweets shop.

Inside, he found a poster on the wall advertising a live concert by the ‘legend’ Half-Moon, who looked suspiciously like Beta himself.

He ripped the poster down, smashed a random guitar, and stared meaningfully at a note he’d found that read, ‘Those 2 eyes see 1 truth.’

Beta went out to the building’s balcony and played Half-Moon’s album at full blast, drawing a crowd of zombies and weeping slightly as he tore off half his mask.

He thanked Alpha, then sliced off half her face to patch his mask before joining the horde.

Hilltop’s refugees, still recovering from their battle with the Whisperers, gathered in the woods.

Eugene (Josh McDermitt) announced that he had made radio contact with a woman outside the group, and Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura) joined him in looking for her.

They came across a cage full of zombies by the side of the road, so they each went to ‘clear’ an area around them, with Ezekiel, who was weak from thyroid cancer, struggling to do so.

That night, his horse fell with a wound that required Ezekiel to stab him in the head, and the ‘king’ wondered if he should turn back, afraid he might get his companions hurt.

Yumiko tried to raise his spirits, saying it no longer mattered what plans they all once had for themselves; she was going on because of the potential for new connections.

‘And you know who we need with us?’ she asked. ‘The man who built a kingdom in the apocalypse.’

The next morning, they rode on, over a bridge and into a city filled with skyscrapers.

There they saw an eerie sight: Zombies dressed in costume as policemen, taco truck drivers, restaurant diners and elderly women, all of them handcuffed in place.

Rounding a corner, they ran into a young woman with a gun and purple streaks in her hair, a character from the comic book named Princess (Paolo Lazaro) who smiled and said, ‘Oh my God! Hi!’

All three of them stared at her in disbelief, and backed up.

The Walking Dead returns with the 15th, and now final, episode of Season 10, entitled The Tower, on Sunday, April 5 at 9 PM ET on AMC.

AMC announced last week that the season finale, A Certain Doom, slated to air on April 12, has been delayed until later this year due to the coronavirus outbreak.
