'The Voice' recap: Top 4 move on to the finals after half of the competition is eliminated

The finalists are set on “The Voice.”

The Top 8 was cut in half during one of the biggest eliminations of the season on the NBC show, sending four talented artists packing just one week short of the finale.

And the playing field is now level. Coaches John Legend, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Kelly Clarkson each enter the finals with only one artist. This marks the first time in seven seasons that all of the coaches will be represented in the finale, host Carson Daly noted.

The Season 17 winner of “The Voice” will be crowned on Dec. 17. But before we get ahead of ourselves, here’s what happened during Tuesday’s semifinal results show:

Last night on ‘The Voice’: Gwen Stefani says ‘cut the camera’ after this Top 8 singer left her in tears

Viewers’ saves

The three artists that received the most viewer votes instantly advanced to the finals: Team John’s Katie Kadan, Team Kelly’s Jake Hoot and Team Blake’s Ricky Duran.

Instant Save

The three artists who finished in the middle of the pack went head-to-head for the final spot in the Top 4 via the last instant save of the season: Team Blake’s Kat Hammock, Team Gwen’s Rose Short and Team Kelly’s duo Hello Sunday.

“A shot is all they need and they just got it,” Daly said.

Hello Sunday showcased their stellar vocals on Sia’s “Chandelier.” This is not the duo’s first time on the brink of elimination. They won an instant save earlier in the season to advance to the Top 13, but could they prevail again?

Clarkson thought so. The “American Idol” alum marveled over the singers’ ages.

“That’s what I’m talking about. You better sing!” she said over the crowd’s rowdy applause. “You are 14 years old tackling this huge (song). I’m so blessed this season. I have such a good team.”

Hammock stuck to her signature, airy sound on King’s “You’ve Got a Friend.” Shelton assured his artist that despite the show’s results, they would continue working together.

“I want you to know you have a record to make, no matter what happens tonight,” he said. “We discovered you; America discovered you. Your journey, at least with me, won’t end here.”

Short belted out Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

“I’m going to embarrass myself by crying on national television again, like Kelly does every day,” Stefani said. “Obviously, America, that was ridiculous. There is no question that you are the most talented human being that I’ve been around.”

With no more coaches’ saves in play, it was up to America to decide who advanced. The winner would be decided by a five-minute flash round of voting.

In the end, Short advanced.

Eliminations

The two artists that received the fewest votes overnight were automatically eliminated: Team John’s Will Breman and Marybeth Byrd.

“The most important thing that I’ve learned through this whole experience is to stay true to yourself,” Byrd said. Breman added that he’s looked up to his coach, John Legend, “for over a decade.”

“It means the world,” Breman said to Legend. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

Hello Sunday and Hammock were also eliminated after failing to clinch the instant save.

“Working with you has been the biggest blessing of my life. You are my hero,” Hammock said to Shelton. Hello Sunday’s Myla Finks told Clarkson, “You have really been the mama bear for us.”

The Top 4 will perform live during Monday’s finale on NBC at 8 EST/PST.
