Olly Murs has revealed that the level of competition on The Voice 2020 is high – and admitted that some acts may not have been turned away if Jennifer Hudson were still on the judging panel.

Meghan Trainor has replaced JHud on the panel and will join Sir Tom Jones, and Olly, who all return to their big red chairs following a summer spent entertaining audiences around the world on their respective tours.

Emma Willis is also back to host the competition with solo singers, duos and trios once again singing in the hope of turning chairs.

Speaking ahead of the new series Olly exclaimed: ‘I think it’s been really good. There’s been some fantastic performances and people that have been turned away this year – more than in any previous year I think – that have been really good. That’s how high the standard has been.

‘I think we overthought a lot of the people that came and I don’t know why that’s different this year…maybe because there’s a different coach which brings a different dynamic.

‘I think some of the singers might have been given a chance if Jennifer Hudson was still here but I feel like Meghan is looking for something different so we all have our own styles.’

The X Factor star went on to explain that he sees Meghan as a ‘bit more competition’ as she is going for the same kind of singers as him.

He continued: ‘In the past, you always felt that Tom and Jennifer would pick the Gospel powerhouse singers but things have shifted with Meghan. She’s slightly in between me and Will. That’s confusing me and Will a bit at the moment….we’re like woah she’s going for those type of singers as well! Bit more competition.

I do think Meghan is my biggest competition. She’s got that fresh energy, she’s really determined to win. In my first year, I had some really good contestants and I felt confident but in the end, we didn’t get over that final hurdle and I think that was due to experience.

‘Whereas this year, I think she’s going to be the one to watch. She’s got a great personality and she’s managed to get on with everyone really quickly.’

The latest series of The Voice UK returns to ITV on 4 January, 2020.
