The Spy Netflix release date, cast, trailer, plot: When is The Spy released?


Sacha Baron Cohen ditches his comic aliases of Borat and Bruno among others to lead the way in historical drama The Spy. Released on Netflix in September, the brand new series is based on the true story of a former Mossad agent who takes on an undercover role in Syria. While the trailer promises a tale on gripping action, there’s plenty more fans need to know ahead of the premiere.

What is The Spy about?

The harrowing true story behind the new series is one that is truly beyond belief.

Netflix’s synopsis for The Spy reads: “The Spy is inspired by the real-life story of former Mossad agent, Eli Cohen, who successfully goes undercover in Syria in the early 1960s.

“Cohen becomes close enough to ambitious military leaders and their rich friends to earn a game-changing level of trust about Syria’s biggest anti-Israel secret initiatives.”

With an agent desperate to do right by his country, he soon finds himself haunted by his efforts as well as struggling maintain a normal family life.

Who stars in The Spy?

Comedic actor Cohen opts for a rare dramatic in The Spy as lead character Eli.

Cohen’s become a globally recognised figure for his characters Ali G, Borat and Bruno as well as starring in films Les Miserables, Talladega Nights and Madagascar.

He isn’t the only big name in the cast, however, with the star of Showtime series Homeland, Hadar Ratzon Rotem taking on the role of Eli’s wife, Nadia.

The Walking Dead star Noah Emmerich plays Eli’s handler, Dan Peleg.

Elsewhere in the cast, Yael Eitan, who starred in USA Network‘s Dig, plays Maya and Mourad Zaoui portrays Benny.

Is there a trailer for The Spy?

Netflix dropped the official promo for the new series at the end of August.

Prominently featuring Cohen as Eli, the trailer depicts the torrid times the character must go through.

Expect plenty of tense moment, gunfights and explosions when the series arrives.

The Spy is released on Netflix on Friday, September 6.
