The Sinner season 2: Are seasons 1 and 2 connected?

The Sinner season two premiered on Netflix today (Friday, August 2). The second series of The Sinner aired in the US on the USA Network in August 2018 and now the new season has finally arrived in the UK on Netflix. Biel does not star in the second season and fans are wondering if this means series one and two of The Sinner are connected in any way.

Are The Sinner seasons 1 and 2 connected?

Season one of The Sinner was based on the novel of the same name by German author Petra Hammesfahr.

The first series was created as a stand-alone story, which means The Sinner season two will follow a brand new plot.

Season two will see a new murder case, led by Detective Harry Ambrose (played by Bill Pullman).

Season one and two of The Sinner are technically not connected in any way.

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE IN THE SINNER SEASON 2?

This is because, after the success of season one, which saw the show receive two nominations at the Golden Globe Awards and a series renewal, The Sinner became an anthology series.

The only character from season one to star in season two of The Sinner is Detective Harry Ambrose.

In season one, Ambrose investigated the case of young mother Cora Tanetti (Jessica Biel) who stabbed a man on the beach.

Cora had no memory of why she committed the crime and Ambrose successfully fought her case in court, which subsequently saw her incarcerated in a mental health facility instead of prison.

Biel will not reprise her role as Cora but will serve as an executive producer on the series.

In the second season, Ambrose will return to his hometown of Keller, Upstate New York to investigate a child killer case.

A young boy called Julian (Elisha Henig) is accused of poisoning a couple, who are thought to be his parents.

However, upon a further investigation, Ambrose uncovers a cover-up in the town that explains exactly why Julian may or may not have killed the couple.

In March 2019, The Sinner was renewed for a third season which is unlikely to be connected to the first two seasons.

The third season will once again star Pullman as Harry Ambrose, who will investigate a fatal car accident in Upstate New York.
