The 'shullet' is a cross between a '90s shag and an '80s mullet, and hairdressers say they're inundated with requests

We don’t mean to alarm anyone, but the mullet hair trend is very much here to stay. But divisive as they are, the modern mullet is nothing to be afraid of. In fact, it’s been seen on everyone from Rihanna to Billie Eilish and Little Mix‘s Leigh-Anne Pinnock. Why? Because it gives effortless ‘cool girl’ vibes with barely any maintenance. They don’t call it the business-up-front party-in-the-back style for nothin’.

But there is more than one way to wear a mullet. When we spoke to the hair gurus at Windle London, they told us that there’s one particular style everyone is asking for – the ‘shullet’.

“None of my customers are coming in directly asking for a mullet – they don’t use that word – but they say they want it a bit long but a bit short, choppier, with more layers, and shaggier,” says Windle stylist Brixton Cowie.

“What we’re ending up with is a cross between the ’90s shag and the harder ’80s mullet – we’re coining this ‘the shullet’ – the must-have hair trend for summer 2021!” Think: the classic choppy fringe of a mullet, with the feathery layers of a shag cut.

Brixton explains that the shullet is sharply increasing in popularity as society begins to open back up again and customers are looking for a bold, unapologetic, rebellious post-lockdown cut – but without the fuss. “Ultimately what we’re seeing post lockdown, is a lot of people being much braver, they want something fresh and they want something new,” says Brixton.

Unlike more clean-cut styles – such as the paper-cut bob, pixie cut or sliced bob – the cool-girl appeal of the shullet is in its effortlessness; simply tousle with your fingers, maybe add a bit of styling cream, and go! You can even wait a few months between cuts to see if you like the grown-out shullet style.

Convinced? We knew you would be. Here’s some shullet inspiration to take to your next salon visit…
