The sheer layering trend is hot right now, so here are 7 pieces to help you nail it

More often than not, you have to be a bit of a bold dresser to rock any of the latest fashion trends. That’s why we were so pleased when we spotted an exception to the rule across the spring/summer 2020 catwalks: sheer layering. The fashion world’s obsession with barely-there, transparent fabrics continues and it’s no-where near as scary as you might first think. Trust.

Sheer, skin-bearing fabrics first became a thing during the spring/summer shows in 2019 when Roksanda showcased ruched, sheer dresses and Saint Laurent’s see-through shirts quickly gained popularity. Valentino got in on the action, too, with monochrome sheer fabrics which we fell head over heels in love for.

For spring/summer 2020, sheer layering has had an update. Sheer dresses and organza blouses are making it bigger than ever, in part because going sheer is a great way to play with silhouettes and textures. Whether you layer a sheer shirt atop a vest or go all out with a sheer dress, you’ll be bang on trend, following in the footsteps of the models at Supriya Lele, House of Holland and Richard Malone.

The only tricky part of the sheer layering trend is knowing what to wear underneath (while still looking like a semi-respectable grown-up), but to be honest, there aren’t any hard or fast rules. If you’re rocking a sheer blouse on a night out, simply donning your best undies can be enough.

To make your sheer dress work, consider a seamless slip like this one from Selfridges. Or how about wearing your sheer midi over jeans and a cami? It works, we promise, and you’ll feel just the right amount of covered up. You could also save the trend for your summer holiday and rock your sheer dress over a bikini. Summer chic, nailed.

Here are our favourite sheer pieces on the high street right now for you to shop. And make sure you check out our round-up of every other trend worth rocking this season, while you’re at it.
