The reckless Tory government is making our climate emergency worse


We face an environment and climate emergency.

The Tories refuse to accept it, but that’s no surprise.

This reckless government has some warm words for our planet, but the reality is that they are making an already desperate situation worse.

According to some of our leading conservation organisations, we are now “among the most nature-depleted countries in the world”.

Great British species including hedgehogs, birds, and butterflies are in worrying decline.

Shamefully, our natural water sources – rivers, lakes, coastal and groundwater – are among Europe’s most polluted.

This affects the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink.

Is the government making it better? No. Its austerity policies are making it all much worse.

British wildlife is in freefall due to nine years of cuts.

Little wonder when Natural England – the organisation that protects our natural environment – has had had its budget cut by almost half since 2010.


 

The UK is a beautiful country. But without urgent action we will lose so much of what we all love about our countryside.

Labour will protect the great British outdoors, preserving habitats and doing everything we can to support plants and animals.

And we won’t cut funds where they are needed the most.

It was a Labour government that brought in the ground-breaking 2008 Climate Change Act.

And it is only through Labour’s bold plans for our environment and the climate that we can tackle the emergency we are facing – before it is too late.
