Netflix’s Scandinavian sci-fi series The Rain first hit screens in 2018. The Rain rapidly became the most-watched Nordic Original series on the streaming service. The third and final series recently dropped on the platform, bringing the show to a close. But many viewers still have questions about the storyline.

The show followed siblings Rasmus (played by Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) and Simone (Alba August) after they were forced by their father Frederik (Lars Simonsen) to live in an underground bunker after a deadly rain struck the country.
The rain was carrying a strange virus which turned anyone it touched into ravenous monstrous creatures shortly before they died.
Rasmus was revealed to have a pure version of the virus living inside him which could possibly offer up a cure and save humanity.
Season one focused on Rasmus and Simone’s lives following their departure from the bunker after six years and their subsequent fight for survival.

In season two, Simone and Rasmus were trying to find a cure which would rid the virus from his body. They desperately tried to get a cure with Apollon hot on the heels but they ultimately failed.
In the final outing, it looked like Rasmus had gone over to the dark side when he decided to work with Apollon and its sinister boss Sten (Johannes Kuhnke).
Sten wanted to infect the world with the virus from Rasmus, believing it was the only way to cure people
However, he seemed to have a shady ulterior motive as it looked like he was still trying to harness the virus for his own ends but luckily was stopped.Season three ended on a bittersweet note as Rasmus sacrificed himself to save the world.
His sister Simone was left devastated by the decision but realised it was sadly the only way to defeat the virus.
Rasmus was carrying the purest form of the virus within him and with his death, it seemed like the infection too died.

“We weren’t really sad yet, we were just excited that we can do this and do this together.”
Tønnesen added: “It was nice to know we closed it off with this season, moving on to other projects.”
He hailed the Netflix’s show’s “epic production” with each season taking six months to shoot.
Reflecting on why Apollon released the virus, the star – better known to viewers as Rasmus – said Sten wanted to a bioweapon to sell to billionaires.
The star said: “So, he created this virus that could be a bioweapon, you could put it into the sky that could kill a lot of people.
“He would sell that weapon to millionaires, but he had to test it first, for them to see.
“I think he once tested it was in a more controlled way, but I think an accident happened and the whole of Scandinavia got wiped up. Then they had to try and fix it.”
Tønnesen said as the show went on, Sten’s motives seem to evolve when he realised Rasmus had the virus and the boy could be used to create a superhuman army at his disposal.
However, Rasmus seemed to realise Sten’s agenda and quickly put an end to the head of Apollon.

Season three of The Rain was filmed in 2019 prior to the coronavirus pandemic with much of the scenes filmed at a studio in Norway rather than Denmark.
The Rain has built up a cult following during its time on screens and despite the COVID-19 lockdown, Tønnesen said he was heartened to see fans still supporting the show.
With the show now at an end, the star is busy working on other projects but couldn’t say much about them.
However, he teased his forthcoming project was “just as exciting” as The Rain and hoped his fans followed his career with him as he moved onto new productions.
On where he’d like to go next in his career, Tønnesen said: “I would like to do many some Danish productions. I’m not saying I’m not wanting to do something international. I think that could be really exciting.
“I’d love to do something in English. I love to act in another language, so I would definitely not put that completely aside.
“I think it would be nice to do a thing here in Denmark first maybe and then we don’t know what’s going to happen. Maybe more Netflix, I don’t know. Maybe.”
