PEOPLE missing visits to their local boozer have flocked to a “virtual” pub on Facebook that hosts live quizzes, music and a darts night.
Former landlady Joanne Bowtell put up a post asking for “bar staff” for Facebook group The Virtual Pub.
Now the mother of two from Spondon, Derbys, has 12 people who help her put on the free events.
And her followers have swelled from 500 to 20,000.
So I asked Joanne for her tips for a virtual pub night — and I’ve included my own . . .
LET’S GET QUIZZICAL: Joanne says of her Facebook group: “A local guy got in touch and the first night, he put up a live video of him doing a pub quiz.
“People answered in the Facebook comments box.”
My tip: Play along — and why not plan a quiz night with your friends using the free Houseparty app?
You can FaceTime and play at the same time.
MUSIC TIME: Joanne says: “We are helping musical acts who have had gigs cancelled.
“We allow them to play music live and we stream it.
“Get in touch if you want to sing for 20,000 people!”
My tip: If you are after more live music, there are plenty of gigs being streamed for free.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has added his musicals to the National Theatre YouTube channel.
SHARE THE LOVE: Joanne says: “We’ve now got global fans and regulars from as far away as Japan.
“One of my friends, Lynne, likes to message her sister who lives in Hawaii and they go online at the same time to watch the gigs.
“It’s bringing people together.
“I’ve had lots of messages from people self-isolating alone who tell me commenting and feeling part of a community keeps them going.
“I’m not making money from this.
“Those messages are value enough for me.”
My tip: Share the live shows with your friends and give them a shout out.
It’s a fun way to boost morale.
Or check in and watch something at the same time.
