The President of Earth Day shares 10 simple things everyone can do to help the planet

World Earth Dayis just days away, on the 22nd April. Of course, you want to be able to do something to support this excellent initiative, but it’s not always easy to know what to do. We spoke to the president of World Earth Day, Kathleen Rogers, to find out some simple things you can do.

Here we go.

  1. Vote for candidates at the national and local level who understand the threats of climate change for our planet’s species and who make species protection a priority.
  2. Reduce meat consumption. Hundreds of millions of acres of forest are clear cut to make way for cows and other livestock. That is devastating to biodiversity around the world. The Amazon is home to approximately 200 million head of cattle. Consuming less meat cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock industry which is also good for our planet’s wildlife and plant species.
  3. Do not purchase single-use plastics and consume fewer plastic products. Plastics are devastating our coral reefs, fish stocks, and marine mammals.
  4. Support campaigns to pass local or national legislation to control or ban the use of single-use plastic.
  5. Reduce or eliminate the use of all pesticides that kill bees or pollinators. Create wildlife gardens and pollinator gardens. Become a beekeeper.
  6. Join campaigns to have the local or national government protect undeveloped areas, especially if they contain rich biodiversity.
  7. Learn what animal products are found in the goods you buy.
  8. Buy and use products that are safe for wildlife. Do not buy wildlife products that come from animals that are trapped or from threatened or endangered species. Buy and use only octinoxate and oxybenzone-free sunscreen to protect marine life and coral reefs.
  9. Support or volunteer with organizations that execute conservation projects on the ground.
  10. Sign petitions and get involved!
