'The Power of the Dog', Netflix's new period drama, just got a four-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival – here's what you need to know

We have a lot to thank Venice Film Festival for, not least the fashion inspiration being served up on the red carpet (Anya Taylor-Joy in hot-pink Dior? Yes please). And – in a shocking turn of events – it turns out there’s some pretty good films premiering there as well? What a treat.

There’s one film, in particular, that everyone seems to be talking about. In fact, The Power of the Dog – written and directed by Jane Campion – received a four-minute standing ovation after its debut at the festival. We’re intrigued…

The film is one of several presented to the festival by Netflix (including Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God ) and, if the trailer is anything to go by, it promises to be brooding masterclass in suspense. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons as Phil and George Burbank: two brothers who run a cattle ranch in 1920s Montana. However, a widow – played by Kirsten Dunst who is Jesse’s partner IRL, soon comes between them, with harrowingly unexpected results.

Here’s everything we know about The Power of the Dog so far…

What is The Power of the Dog about?

Based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same name, The Power of the Dog explores the brutish dynamic between two farmers, Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) and brother George (Jesse Plemons), whose relationship buckles after George marries Rose (Kirsten Dunst). Phil begins to torment Rose, cruelly mocking her son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), before inexplicably taking him under his wing.

Netflix’s official synopsis reads: “A domineering, magnetic rancher responds with mocking cruelty when his brother brings home a new wife and her son, until the unexpected comes to pass.”

Who stars in The Power of the Dog?

Kirsten Dunst (Marie Antoinette, Bring It On) stars as Rose, whose marriage to George Burbank – played by her IRL partner, Jesse Plemons (Black Mirror) enrages Phil Burbank, played by Benedict Cuberbatch (Sherlock Holmes). Kodi Smit-McPhee will play Rose’s son and object of Phil’s torment, Peter.

You can also keep an eye out for Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Keith Carradine, Thomasin McKenzie, and Sean Keenan.

When will The Power of the Dog be released?

According to Netflix, it will be released in select cinemas in November 2021, and will be available to stream on Netflix from 1 December 2021.
