The 'patterned tip' is the fresh new take on the French manicure

New year, new you? The French manicure thought so too.

Long gone is the chunky, square French manicure that Paris Hilton and J-Lo made their signature in the early ‘00s and in its place comes a fresh and bold new take on the classic; meet the ‘patterned tip’.

The patterned tip design is all over our Instagram grids right now, and as its moniker suggests, it involves painting the tip of your nail with a bold and colourful design.

This new design can still be just as classy as the old style, according to Joely Frain, a nail technician at 81 Rose Garden salon, who explains that “the variations of French tips can be really funky whilst not over the top, as the majority of the nail is still nude.” Think nude nails with leopard-print tips or peachy-hued talons offset with effervescent ends.

The best thing about this new trend is that it comes in many different forms; if you’re feeling a bit nostalgic and want to stick to the classic square shape, create a more modern feel by going for a thin strip of colour. However, if you want to give it more of a twist – go for the deep ballerina french style, which nail artist Kirstan Hart from Nail Hart salon is obsessing over. Kirstan explains that this intricate look is achieved using freehand painting and the finished result is pretty much a work of art.

If we’ve given you too much inspo and you don’t think you can settle on just one design, Kirstan says her favourite customers are the ones that plump for mismatched hands. Your nails, your rules.
