The Outer Worlds story DLC announced for 2020

Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds is getting its own story DLC next year, as the developer thanks fans for the game’s unexpected success.

It’s been a good couple of years for Fallout: New Vegas and South Park: Stick Of Truth developer Obsidian Entertainment. Not only did they get bought by Microsoft but the last game before that happened – The Outer Worlds – has become a surprise hit.

Although it didn’t actually win any, The Outer Worlds had four separate nominations at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year, and has been a major sales success.

The future of the series is unclear though as The Outer Worlds is multiformat and published by 2K label Private Division, whereas Microsoft is now entitled to publish any sequels themselves and make it an Xbox and PC exclusive.

Except they’ve been reticent to announce anything definitive about their plans for the franchise and at the moment the focus is on story DLC and a Switch version next year.

The DLC got a low-key announcement on Obsidian’s forums, where they thanked fans and celebrated their Game Awards nominations.

‘The journey isn’t over yet as we are excited to announce that we will be expanding the story through DLC next year! Details will be made available at a later date’, reads the post.

That’s all they wrote, so what the DLC is and when exactly it’ll be out is a mystery, but given The Outer Worlds is a single-player role-playing game the best bet is some sort of old school story expansion, similar to the ones for Skyrim or, if we’re lucky, The Witcher 3.

The Switch version of The Outer Worlds also doesn’t have a date, although their co-op survival game Grounded – which was revealed at X019 last month – has the slightly more specific release date of spring 2020.
