The Outer Worlds release date, gameplay and trailer news

Published by Private Division, The Outer Worlds is an open-world shooter set in a corporate-run colony called Halcyon on the edge of the galaxy, but all is not as it seems. You play as a colonist that stumbles on a conspiracy threatening to destroy the colony, and in true Obsidian style, your actions will dictate the outcome of the game.

Interested? You should be, it’s one of the best upcoming games right now ahead of release later this year. Here’s all you need to know about The Outer Worlds, from the release date to the latest gameplay news and the latest gameplay trailer showcased at E3 2019.

When will The Outer Worlds be released?

We’ve known for some time that The Outer Worlds would be released in 2019, but it wasn’t until E3 2019 that the release date was confirmed: 25 October 2019.

It’ll be available for PC, Xbox One and even PS4 once it’s released despite Microsoft’s purchase of developer Obsidian earlier this year. That’s apparently due to an agreement between Obsidian and publisher Private Division made prior to the buyout that Microsoft is happy to adhere to.

To our surprise, in July it was also announced that The Outer Worlds is coming to Nintendo Switch. The release date is just listed as ‘2019’ though, so there’s a chance that the Switch port will release a month or two later than the other versions.

Latest The Outer Worlds trailers

The announcement trailer for The Outer Worlds made its debut at The Game Awards 2018, though Obsidian was teasing the game for some days prior. The trailer showcases the dangerous and whacky world the game is set in, and sets the tone for the game. Spoiler: it’s full of lolz.

Not much else was showcased until E3 2019, when a brand new gameplay trailer was revealed. It’s much of the same, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, right?

The Outer Worlds gameplay news

So, what can we expect from The Outer Worlds? Our main source of information is the announcement trailer, seen above, and a brief Steam listing. The game seems to be an open-world first-person shooter with various RPG elements set in a dystopian universe where massive corporations own entire planets, and most importantly, it’s a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

In true Obsidian style, the game is player-driven. Your approach to The Outer Worlds will not only dictate how the story develops but your character’s build, companion stories and most importantly, end-game consequences.

You’ll meet various characters throughout your travels across the various settlements, space stations and other dangerous environments Halcyon has to offer, and some will be interested in joining your crew. These companions come with unique abilities, motivations and ideals. It’s down to you to choose whether they become a part of your crew, and if you’ll help them achieve their goals.

We’re very excited by what The Outer Worlds has to offer, and we can’t wait to find out more about the open-world game in the coming months. We’ll update this article as more information becomes available, so make sure you bookmark this page and check back regularly!
