The one Sir Alex Ferguson tactic that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must employ at Man Utd

That is according to ex-Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood, who thinks Manchester United need a squad who can take self responsibility.

The United boss admitted in July that the club need a player like club legend Bryan Robson, who was renowned for his leadership qualities from central midfield.

That’s after the Red Devils crashed to a miserable sixth-placed finish in the Premier League last season with their form disastrous towards the climax of the campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made three signings this summer in Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire, with the closure of the transfer window yesterday now leading to stringent examinations of each club’s business.

The general consensus is that while United’s buys are positive, they have not done enough to bridge the gap to Manchester City or Liverpool and even missed an opportunity to make a jump on top-four rivals Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Sherwood believes that Harry Maguire can be an important player at Old Trafford and has urged Solskjaer to ensure he establishes a leadership group at the club as they had under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sherwood told Premier League Productions: “Ole needs to recognise who are his mainstays.

“[Harry] Maguire now for sure, that sort of money, playing in that sort of responsible position as a centre-half, has to be one of them leaders.

“Ole has to get a cartel together. Together they will police the dressing room.

“You ask these two guys [Michael Owen and Owen Hargreaves] when they went in United’s dressing room, Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t have to manage them.

“He didn’t have to, the players managed themselves and policed the dressing room.

“You have to create that culture, it doesn’t just happen.”

Sherwood thinks Paul Pogba is one player in particular who could command respect in the dressing room, though he believes it might be too late with the Frenchman seemingly keen to join Real Madrid.

He added: “Pogba for me is one he should have got onside. It might be too late now.

“Could have had him onside, got all the ability in the world, worth spending the time, worth giving the babysitting to. He’s one I’d give extra time to to get him onside.

“By getting him onside, you’d get three, four, five, six others onside because he’d be able to control it because he’s such a big influence.”
