The One Show’s Alex Jones gets dream gift as she goes on maternity leave

It’s an office tradition that your colleagues will take every opportunity to embarrass you – birthdays, engagements, baby announcements.

If you think that’s bad, try being Alex Jones whose The One Show pals went above and beyond to celebrate her as she leaves the show for a while to go on maternity leave.

As the credits were about to roll on Alex’s final show as a mum-of-one, co-presenter Shane Richie surprised her with a very thoughtful gift… a train seat named after her.

And she was absolutely thrilled.

No really, she was.

Turns out Alex has wanted a train seat named after her for a while, but not just on any old train – the iconic Snowdon Mountain Railway in Northwest Wales.

On an old episode of The One Show which was re-aired during the surprise, the 42-year-old presenter brought up the fact that welsh legend singer Bryn Terfel had one of the trains named after him.

It actually transpired that fellow welsh women Shirely Bassey and Katherine Jenkins also had their very own mountain railway trains – a fact Alex didn’t seem so happy about.

Don’t worry, she was joking. At least we think she was…

But now thanks to her BBC colleagues, there is a seat on a Snowdon Mountain Railway train with a plaque reading ‘Alex Jones, The One Show’.

‘I’m chuffed,’ said Alex through laughter, and didn’t even mind when Shane said the seat was originally dedicated to fellow countryman Aled Jones.

Awkward…

While Alex is away on maternity leave, Emma Willis, Mel Giedroyc and Stacey Dooley will be among the presenters filling in for her.

‘I know The One Show will be in very capable hands while I’m on maternity leave and good luck to all the guest presenters – I hope they have as much fun as I do on the show,’ she said of her much-deserved break.

‘I’ll be back on the sofa in the autumn, but in the meantime, I plan on watching from my own sofa with little Teddy and the newest addition!’

The One Show airs on weekdays, at 7pm, on BBC One.
