The One Show's Alex Jones breaks down in tears as she's reunited with mum on air

The One Show presenter Alex Jones was forced to wipe her eyes on this evening’s show, as she was reunited with her mum over video chat.

Alex, 43, was surprised to see her beloved mum Mary phone into the studio – reducing the BBC star to tears.

Her co-presenter, sportswoman and former Strictly star Alex Scott, helped to orchestrate the elaborate surprise on the show.

Due to the lockdown restrictions, Alex hasn’t been able to see her mum for several months, with the mother-daughter duo keeping their distance to adhere to social distancing measures.

Footballer Alex read out messages from viewers on her iPad, including one from a mysterious fan named “Mary”.

Alex’s mum Mary contacted the show from her home in Wales

She said: “A message from Mary now who’s from somewhere near Swansea who says she can’t wait to see her daughter, who she says she hasn’t seen in 16 weeks.”

Starting to clock on, Alex pressed a hand to her chest, as her co-host announced: “In fact, she can’t wait any longer and here she is, actually.”

Mary appeared in the middle of the studio on a TV screen, video calling her celebrity daughter from her home in Wales.

Alex was moved to tears over the surprise appearance from her mum

Lost for words, Alex exclaimed: “Oh mum!”

Trying to hold back her tears, the BBC star added: “Hiya mum! It’s only going to be – how many days now? Five?”

Just as moved by the reunion, doting mum Mary added that it had been “five very long months” since they last met in person.

Alex tried her best to regain her composure after the heartwarming moment

With both wiping away their tears, Alex remarked: “This is the first time I’ve seen her get quite emotional.”

Reaching out to viewers, Ms Scott announced that Alex would be reuniting with her family in person in the coming days, heading to her native Wales.

Her voice breaking, Alex added: “It’s been a real privilege to come to work every day with you lot. And thanks, as well as my family, for getting me through this really weird time.

“It’s been a real honour to do this job.”

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One
