The One Show: 'Sorry' Matt Baker left red-faced as guest corrects him over slip-up

The One Show returned to BBC One tonight and Matt Baker was joined by Michelle Ackerley to present the show.

Joining them on the green sofas was Aisling Bea, an Irish actress, comedian and writer who was promoting her new show This Way Up which is making its debut on Channel 4 later tonight.

Those watching at home were treated to a sneak preview of a scene which is set to air on episode one, and following that Matt went onto discuss the topic which fuelled the narrative, but was quickly corrected by Aisling.

This Way Up is a six part comedy series about a woman recovering from a “teeny little nervous breakdown” and is the brainchild of Aisling and her co-star Sharon Horgan.

Discussing the development of the initial idea, Matt kicked off the conversation with: “You actually said initially that actually producing the whole thing, putting it out there was like giving birth to a horse!”

“Yes, I haven’t had any children of human or horse size but I can only imagine!” The comedian responded. “In stand up, there’s an immediacy to creating and going on stage and showing an audience.

“With this it’s been years in the making. We filmed this months ago.”

“We’ve actually got a clip, let’s take a look,” Michelle interjected.

Following the clip, Matt assumed: “It’s so brilliantly done because obviously it’s a hard-hitting subject but it’s done in a comedic way. How difficult has that been, that line between the two?”

Aisling then corrected the presenter as she explained: “Do you know what? Not difficult. I was going to say maybe it’s an Irish sentimentality to put death and comedy right beside each other, I don’t see the two existing as polar opposites.

“From the story we’ve just seen, I feel comedy is such a wonderful way of exploring subjects and showing people in all their complexities.

“Just because you might have severe disability or you have something going on in your life, you don’t lose who you are, you don’t lose being funny, your ability to want, need or have a laugh,” she continued.

“For me it wasn’t hard to do because that’s more like life, and sometimes I think when you call something a ‘hard-hitting subject’ it makes people go ‘Jesus, I’ll put that on my watchlist for when I’m feeling really bad.’”

The camera then panned to Matt who looked directly down the lens and apologised jokily: “Right, sorry,”

He then moved the conversation swiftly on by announcing the time viewers could expect the show to be on television screens before welcoming their final guest.

“Right, it’s time now to find out whether this painting here is a fake or whether it’s a fortune,” he commented.

It comes after yesterday’s show when BBC One viewers tuned in to see the guest refuse to answer a question which was posed to them.

Dragons’ Den is having a shake-up after Jenny Campbell announced her departure from the popular BBC Two show.

In her place will sit Sara Davies, who is a retail entrepreneur.

Ahead of the new series kicking off on Sunday night, Sara joined Matt and Michelle to discuss the initial time she was offered a Dragons’ spot, but she was stumped when Matt asked her one particular question.

The One Show airs weekday evenings at 7pm on BBC One.
