We’ve had the ‘ugly trainer‘ and the ‘dad sandal‘, but when it comes to unexpected shoe resurgences, the latest looks set to be the most popular yet.
The humble flip flop, no less, is making serious waves on the fashion scene right now. Having been spotted here and there last year, it’s really hit the big time this summer, with some of our favourite celebrities and influencers slipping on a pair. And they’re not just wearing them to stroll to the pool and sling beneath their sunbed either; we’ve spotted endless pairs being flipped and flopped between some of the coolest shows at fashion week. Who’d have thought it?
Set to thrill our mums, in particular, who haven’t taken theirs off since Tenerife ’03, it’s officially time to swap your fussy, uncomfortable sandals for this classic style.
The even better news? Unlike most high fashion trends, the flip flop has stayed true to its roots and remained entirely affordable. While there are pricier options – the £650 low-heeled Balenciaga pair, for example – the classic £18 Havaianas are one of the most popular amongst the street style set.
And while we’re used to seeing them with swimsuits and bucket hats (the first time around!), the contemporary way to wear them is even easier – just know that there are no rules.
Frilly, full-sleeved, formal midi dress? Flip flops.
Loose-fitting linen trousers? Flip flops.
Tailored shorts? Jeans? Mini dresses? Flip flops, flip flops, flip flops.
You get the gist.
A word of warning, though – as comfortable as they look (and are, after a good few wears), if you’re anything like us and have gone several years (/decades) without wearing the rubber variety, it’s a good idea to give them a few test runs around the living room to toughen the old toe-web (not something we envisaged typing this morning). That flexible toe post may *look* harmless, but after a few hours of pavement-pounding, you’ll be battling a serious blister situation.
