The most-searched for baby names of 2020 revealed – including Luna, Maeve and Milo

AS an unprecedented year finally comes to an end, the most-searched for names for boys and girls in 2020 have been revealed. 

While daily life was turned upside down for most Brits, one thing which stayed the same is the amount of babies being born – as couples made the most of lockdown together.

Website Nameberry has shared the most popular choices over the past 12 months, which should be an indicator of what names will soar in popularity next year. 

Announcing the list, they said: “These are the names that got the most views on our site this year. 

“They’re the ones on name-savvy parents’ (or future parents’) minds, so they’re a pretty good measure of what will be hot in the year ahead.”

In first place for girls is Luna – which finally knocks Olivia off the top spot.

In second place is traditional Maeve, followed by Aurora, in fourth place is Isla and making up the top five is Ava. 

In sixth place is Eleanor, and then comes Ophelia – which Millie Radford chose for her daughter born earlier this year. 

Finally in eighth place is former top choice Olivia, followed by Aurelia and then Eloise. 

Nameberry also shared the list of girls’ names which had entered the top 100 for the first time – or returned after falling out of favour.

They noted choices with an ‘el’ sound had soared in popularity, with Eliana, Ella, Ellie all making a comeback. 

More traditional choices appeared to be shunned this year, with Abigail, Emily, Gemma, Hannah, Isobel and Juliet dropping out of the top 100. 

Royal names featured in the top 100, with Charlotte making it to 13th place, Zara with 50th, Beatrice 56th while Elizabeth was 63rd.

For boys, the top choice remained the same for the second year in a row – Milo. 

While two more ‘O’ sounding names entered the top 10 – Leo and Arlo – proving this style of names could be seen more in 2021. 

In second place for boys is the traditional moniker Atticus, and in third place is Asher. 

Next is Silas, then new entry Leo, followed by Arlo in sixth place. 

Next is Theodore, then Oliver, followed by Felix and finally in tenth place is Jasper. 

Nameberry revealed some unusual choices had entered, or returned, to the top 100 this year, including Caspian, Lucifer and Orion.

Traditional boy’s names had also slipped down the rankings, with Charlie, Graham, Harry, Ian and Simon all disappearing from the top 100. 

They also pointed out biblical names are enjoying a resurgence, with Ezekiel, Noah and Malachi all making it to the top 100. 

As well as names ending with an ‘O’ sound, Nameberry also noticed names beginning with ‘Luc’ were also soaring in popularity, including Lucian, Lucius, Luke and Lucas.

Royal boys’ names also made the top 100, with Louis ranked 52nd place, Archie in 55th, while William was 63rd.
