The most glamorous Oscars dresses of all time – from the 1950s to present day

The Academy Awards are finally here, with dozens of nervous celebrities putting the finishing touches to their red carpet looks across Hollywood.

Better known as the Oscars, the most glamorous night in all of showbiz has been happening since 1929 and this year it will celebrate its 91st ceremony.

And that means millions of sequins, miles of lace and countless reams of satin has gone into thousands of dresses over the years.

Here we take a look at some of the most glamorous Oscars dresses ever as we look forward to another year of judging expensive outfits while we sit on the sofa in our pyjamas stuffing our faces with crisps.

Audrey Hepburn 1956

Arguably the defining celebrity beauty of that decade, Audrey Hepburn looked incredible at the 1956 ceremony.

The stunning actress wore a breathtaking white gown with thick white straps as she appeared to float around the 28th Academy Awards like a beautiful cloud.

Her brunette locks were worn in her famous beehive, with a delicate ivory cap protecting her bun.

She added a pair of long white gloves that reached up to her upper arm.

While she wasn’t nominated for anything that year, she still stole the show when she got up on stage to present the gong for Best Picture for the movie Marty.

Cher 1986

Only Cher could pull off the look she wore at the 1986 Oscars

No one else could wear the outfit that Cher wore in 1986, and that’s why she deserves a place on this list.

The singer-turned-actress-turned-Twitter-icon arrived in an enormous feather headdress, a sequin crop top and matching sparkly trousers so low we know what she asks for when she goes for a bikini wax.

She accessorised with a glittery black cape, because of course she did.

And not only did she have the most memorable dress of that year, Cher also picked up the award for Best Actress for Moonstruck two years later.

Elizabeth Hurley 1995

When a young Hugh Grant is your accessory, it doesn’t really matter what your dress looks like.

But Elizabeth Hurley still managed to look incredible in heavily embellished white Versace frock that clung to her figure.

It featured a daringly low cut neckline and was cropped just above her feet, allowing her to show off some seriously nineties high heeled sandals.

Hugh had been there to present an award but he was already taking home the best prize of the night with Liz.

Gwyneth Paltrow 1999

The 71st Academy Awards was Gwyneth Paltrow’s big night as she took home the award for Best Actress for Shakespeare in Love.

But aside from her win and slightly cringe acceptance speech, it is her pink Ralph Lauren ballgown that we remember.

The dress was made of a crinkled material and featured two barely there spaghetti straps, which allowed the material to hang off Gwyn’s incredible frame.

To amp up the drama she accessorised with a matching shawl and an enormous diamond bracelet with a matching bracelet.

Angelina Jolie 2012

The 2012 Oscars was all about Angelina Jolie’s leg

If you looked at it on a clothes rail, there’s not much that’s special about Angelina Jolie’s black velvet 2012 Oscars dress.

But when the timeless beauty put it on she made red carpet history, thanks to the slit on the thigh.

Ange stuck her leg out and popped her hip, working the cameras like only a true Hollywood pro with years of experience could.

She wore her brunette hair in tumbling curls and a pop of red lipstick was enough to complete this already iconic look.

Jennifer Lawrence 2013

Jennifer Lawrence’s 2013 Oscars dress is a modern classic

Giving us Audrey Hepburn vibes, Jennifer Lawrene’s floor-sweeping Dior number from 2013 is a modern classic.

The strapless gown was made of an eye-catching fabric and ruffled around the skirt, giving the illusion that she was floating as she went up to accept her award.

Unfortunately as she picked up the gong for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook, she fell up the stairs.

But who cares when you look that good?

Lady Gaga has never been one for understated glam and in 2019 she didn’t let us down.

Her dramatic black strapless dress featured large hip pads that gave her an other-worldly style.

She teamed it with black leather gloves and a diamond necklace while wearing her hair in a classic beehive.

And Gaga, who picked up the Best Original Song award for Shallow, shocked fans when she performed with her A Star Is Born Bradley Cooper.

The pair looked very close as they serenaded each other on stage, but both claimed it was all just their acting skills.
