The Midnight REVIEW: '80s synthwave duo give show-stopping performance

A song with plentiful bouts of synth, saxophone, guitar solos and vocals could be messy in concept, but it was sublime, and McEwan, Lyle, Broussard, and Molloy had the performance down to a perfect choreography.

The idiosyncrasies of each member’s unique performance embellished the beautiful composition of Sunset’s album version, and really made for an unbelievable improvement to an already well-established song.

The Midnight proved they can pack the Roundhouse with synthwave fans on a Tuesday night without fail. Blending an unnatural amount of live instruments and synthesised sounds gave the band an edge over other artists in the Outrun genre right now. Although they showed a few signs of wear-and-tear after their extensive European tour, Lyle and McEwan were energetic, entertaining, and inspiring throughout their entire show.

Drenched in a sea of neon, McEwan and Lyle looked stunned by the response they received as they left the stage – something they ought to get used to if they keep up this momentum.

The Midnight’s latest album Kids is available on iTunes now.
