'The Masked Singer' recap: Elephant, revealed to be Tony Hawk, is stomped out of competition

Spoiler alert! This story contains details from the Feb. 19 episode of “The Masked Singer,” including the identity of the eliminated celebrity.

Six new singers are stepping up.

Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer” introduced the second group of contestants for the costumed singing competition. The first few episodes of the series’ third season focused on six initial contestants, and Robot, Llama and Miss Monster have already been eliminated. That leaves Kangaroo, Turtle and White Tiger still in the race with spots in the final nine.

Two boxers showed up to promote their pay-per-view fight, but after guest panelists appeared in the first three episodes, only the original judges reported for duty Wednesday: Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke and Nicole Scherzinger.

Here are the newest players to the game, including one whose time has already been cut short.

Frog

Clues: The toad-ally sharply-dressed participant explained his “metamorphosis has been anything but typical.” He remarked on his “lightning” quick route to stardom and complained he “never had a change to evolve my image and do things my way.”

The show certainly wants you to believe it is rapper Bow Wow. Leftovers appeared onscreen, and “Doggy Bag” is the title of a Bow Wow album. There was also a “like” thumb attached to a microphone, which could be a reference to the 2002 movie “Like Mike,” in which Bow Wow stars. His former hosting gig on BET’s “106 & Park” was also referenced with $106 in bills.

Guesses: The judges had a different idea after Frog performed MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This.” McCarthy guessed Olympian Michael Johnson, after a clue about the games. Jeong thought of Carl Lewis, while Scherzinger believed musician Ray J was a possibility.

A ‘Masked Singer’ e-llama-nation: The man inside the four-legged suit is revealed to be …

Elephant

Clues: Elephant reflected on a career that started as a child. “I was a calf when I found my calling,” he said, adding that he “turned my passion into a one-man show.”

Hinting at time spent in politics, or at least a trip to the nation’s capital, he added: “I went from canvassing park benches to leading the charge of a massive movement, even parading through White Houses.”

Objects highlighted included blue jays, stop signs and drum sticks. After his rendition of The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love,” Elephant gave another clue to his identity. “I do not do dance choreography at all, but this costume and this mask gives me the confidence to go for it.”

Guesses: Who could it be? McCarthy envisioned disgraced former professional cyclist Lance Armstrong. Scherzinger predicted it could be Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker or musician Tommy Lee. Thicke deemed these good guesses, while Jeong went with former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke.

Kitty

Clues: The contestant voiced a fondness for the peculiar, saying she feels comfortable “among the weird and the wonderful” at the show. She also spoke of going through a transformation. “Sometimes it feels lonely, because people don’t think of me as the person I’ve become, but the person I once was,” she revealed.

During her clue package, Kitty was shown in a theater, and a clip of fighting pirates was shown.

Following her spin on Ariana Grande’s sultry “Dangerous Woman,” Kitty shared she was showing off a part or her that was previously unrevealed. “I am being somebody that nobody has ever seen before, and has always been inside of me,” she said. “So, it’s great.”

Guesses: Scherzinger threw out Paris Hilton and dancer Julianne Hough. Jeong brought up Hilton’s “The Simple Life” co-star, Nicole Richie.

Taco

Clues: Let’s taco ’bout the mystery of this contestant, who has been in showbiz “for decades.” There were certainly references to actor Tim Allen, who stars on Fox’s “Last Man Standing,” as the challenger wanted to go “to enchiladas and beyond” (“Toy Story” callout) and desired to be “the last mask standing.” But after hearing him belt out Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” that guess seems like it needs some (home) improvement.

The clue package showed cassette tapes, a trolley, an anchor and a Rubik’s cube.

Guesses: Scherzinger provided a final answer of daytime legend Regis Philbin, while Jeong suspected actor/comedian Martin Short. Thicke, apparently thinking the house felt “Fuller,” guessed actor/comedian Bob Saget.

Mouse

Clues: Forget quiet as a mouse, this star says her “presence is larger than life.” In fact, she said she’s “always been a leader in my field,” and “wrote the playbook.”

Communicating her high standards, Mouse said during the clue package, taped on a football field, “I never accept anything less than gold.”

Guesses: Hearing Mouse croon Oleta Adams’ “Get Here” made Scherzinger think of singer Darlene Love, but reminded Thicke of songstress Dionne Warwick. Jeong, thinking the contestant could be an impressionist, brought up former “SNL” star Maya Rudolph.

Banana

Clues: Banana touted his ap-peel. The singer said this wasn’t his “first rodeo” and that he was “A hoot to have at parties.”  He added that he just wants to see viewers smile.

Objects that could be revelatory included a blowfish, school bus, and blue animal collar.

After performing “A Little Less Conversation” by Elvis Presley, Banana mentioned that he has a daughter.

Guesses: The clues made McCarthy think it could be Bill Engvall, a comedian with the Blue Collar Comedy group. Scherzinger thought of another funny man, actor Ed Helms. Interpreting the clues as a nod to Hootie & the Blowfish, Thicke predicted singer Darius Rucker.

The Elimination

After Banana performed, somebody had to split. And that somebody turned out to be Elephant.

Doling out final guesses, McCarthy and Jeong stuck with their original picks, but Scherzinger and Thicke shook things up with DJ Steve Aoki and motorsports competitor Travis Pastrana, respectively.

Though they were “close,” no one on the panel guessed correctly, and the Elephant was revealed to be skateboarder Tony Hawk. who said going home fourth was fine by him.

“I appreciated your support, and this is a totally new experience for me,” Haw said, expressing his gratitude. “I had one more song in me, but I didn’t want to go much further.”
