Security is so tight behind-the-scenes of ITV’s new series The Masked Singer that the contestants have no idea of the identities of the other celebrities competing on the series.

The show’s bosses took to extreme measures to make sure the famous stars were kept under wraps throughout filming and even forced them to wear balaclavas and hoodies to conceal their faces while traveling to and from the studio.

Alan Johnson, who was revealed to be The Pharaoh in scenes that aired last night, revealed all the antics after being booted from the process and admitted that he was even put up in a hotel under a different name during his time on the programme.

‘The car came to pick me up from the hotel which I was registered as George Larkin,’ Alan began.

‘The car came to pick up Mr Larkin and on the backseat, there was a bag, and as soon as we came to the gates I had to put on a balaclava, a visor – which you see on the programme – and then a hoodie with “don’t speak to me” written on the front.’

Alan continued: ‘Every time the contestants were going out to the loo or leaving their dressing room for any purpose, they had to have all that on.

‘Very few people know [the identities of the other contestants]. Obviously the make-up lady had to know and people doing the costumes, nobody else. They did it very skillfully.’

Alan also pointed out that while judges Ken Jeong, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Rita Ora are none the wiser about who the celebrity contestants are, presenter Joel Dommett is also kept in the dark too.

Alan also let slip that we should be paying closer attention to the mysterious acts’ song choice because they provide clues.

When asked whether the other celebrities on the show would also have sneaky giveaways in their song choices, Alan replied: ‘Yes, there will be clues there as well as clues they’re giving during the panel interview.

‘There are clues dotted around all over the place.’

The Masked Singer continues on Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
