The Mandalorian spoilers: Giancarlo Esposito reveals Moff Gideon's motives in season 2

The first live-action Star Wars TV series is making its thrilling return this weekend. With new episodes of The Mandalorian available each Friday on Disney Plus, fans have been wondering what the mysterious Moff Gideon has in store for the brave bounty hunter. Villainous star Giancarlo Esposito finally has some answers.

The Mandalorian’s first season stunned die-hard Star Wars fans and newcomers to the mythos alike earlier this year.

Originally released in the US in 2019, the series became an international sensation when episodes were aired across the globe during the coronavirus pandemic.

Production on the follow-up season began almost immediately after the first instalment wrapped, so Disney streamers have eight brand new episodes to look forward to over the coming weeks.

In the first season, Mandalorian warrior Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) briefly faced off against a cold-hearted Imperial baddie, Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito).

Taking place shortly after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Gideon represents a renegade faction of the Fallen Empire after the destruction of the second Death Star.

Although the two enemies both escaped with their lives, Gideon will stop at nothing to take his revenge and restore the Empire’s control over the galaxy.

A former officer of the Imperial Security Bureau, he was also confirmed to be in possession of the formidable Darksaber, a legendary black lightsaber from the Star Wars’ universe’s extended canon.

Season two is expected to pull in plenty of characters from across the Star Wars franchise, including animated hero Ahsoka Tano rumoured to make her live-action debut.

It can also be assumed Esposito was using the alternative definition of the word ‘quarry’, which refers to an animal pursued by a predator.

As fans were also introduced to The Child, dubbed ‘Baby Yoda’ by most viewers, in the first season, Gideon most likely makes his return to continue the chase for the infantile Force-user.

Baby Yoda demonstrated strength in the Force hitherto unseen in the Star Wars universe, and could be the key in tipping the scales of good and evil.

However, Gideon’s exact motivations for getting his hands on The Child remain a mystery, and it is still unknown whether or not he’s serving a higher authority.

While Return of the Jedi famously concluded with the deaths of Darth Vader and the Emperor, there are still plenty of Imperial leaders waiting for the opportunity to strike back.

Teasing his role in the new season, Esposito added: “He’s going to make this show and allow us to take a journey spiritually to who we really are inside.”

After short appearances in The Mandalorian season one, fans are looking forward to seeing Giancarlo Esposito take on yet another iconic baddie over the next eight weeks.

The Mandalorian continues Fridays on Disney Plus.
