The Man Utd star who was "close to tears" after Man City defeat


David De Gea was said to be ‘close to tears’ following Manchester United ‘s defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday.

United slipped to a seventh loss in nine matches in all competitions after second-half goals from City’s Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane, with questions asked of De Gea for his attempts to stop the second.

The Spain international has been far from his brilliant best this term and has not kept a clean sheet since the draw with Liverpool in the league on February 24, a run of 12 matches.

The Daily Mail reports that the defeat to City in midweek left De Gea particularly distraught, with the keeper said to be close to tears in the dressing room following the match at Old Trafford.

The report also went on to note that the 28-year-old’s sombre mood had not improved much by the time he reported to Carrington for training on Thursday morning.

Questions have been asked of De Gea throughout the season, with the Spaniard having made a number of high-profile errors.

The United stopper’s stuttering campaign resulted in him missing out on being named in the PFA Team of the Year for the first time since 2014.

The 28-year-old’s contract at Old Trafford expires next summer after the Red Devils activated a one-year option in his deal in November.

De Gea’s form has led some to call for Sergio Romero to replace him in goal

De Gea was understood to be happy to sign a new contract as recently as February, but there has been little news since regarding a possible extension.

The former Atletico keeper’s recent form has led to suggestions that he could be replaced between the sticks by understudy Sergio Romero for Sunday’s crucial game at home to Chelsea .

But in his pre-match press conference ahead of that fixture, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he would stand by De Gea .
