The Last of Us consisted of the rough-around-the-edges Joel escorting the young Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States, battling not only zombie-like creatures but human enemies too. It was one of the most critically-acclaimed games released on the PlayStation 3, and won over 240 “Game of the Year” awards along with a host of others. In fact, it was so popular that it was remastered and re-released for the PlayStation 4.
Here, we discuss everything we know so far about The Last of Us 2 and why it’s one of our most anticipated games, including release date rumours, gameplay, platforms and the latest trailers.

When is The Last of Us 2 coming out?
After months and years of uncertainty, The Last of Us Part II was finally confirmed for a February 2020 release… and then delayed.
The game is now due out on PS4 on 29 May 2020.
You can pre-order the game from Amazon. It’s a PS4 exclusive, so you’ll need to own one if you want to play the game.
What can I expect from The Last of Us 2?
In the trailer at the top of this page very little is given away. An adult Ellie – dripping with blood and with a bruised and bloodied hand – sits next to a corpse playing a soulful tune on the guitar, interspersing sections from Psalm 23 with her own lyrics, saying she can’t be on the side of the right because she’s wrong.
Joel appears and asks if she will go through with her plan and she responds with, “I’m gonna find and I’m gonna kill every last one of them.”
We also got a look at The Last Of Us Part 2 at Paris Games Week 2017, though the graphic video (seen below) gave away little and featured none of the main characters. Some suggest the woman hanged in the tree could be Ellie’s mother. Be warned: it’s difficult to watch.
Other trailers have hinted a little more at the plot – including what appears to be a budding romance for Ellie that may tie into the game’s revenge plot – but the devs are still keeping quiet about the bulk of the plot.
In its description, Naughty Dog simply said: “At its core, The Last of Us Part II is still very much about Ellie and Joel, but for this reveal, we wanted to showcase several new characters that are integral to their next journey. We’re sure you have many questions after watching this scene. We’re also pretty sure that we’re going to see all sorts of theories about whom these characters are, where and when this scene takes place, and how all of this fits into Ellie and Joel’s next story. For now, we’re keeping mum, but we’re excited to see what y’all make of this piece of the puzzle.”
And with the reveal of another gameplay video at E3 2018, it seems the ultra-gory gameplay is here to stay. While the scene starts at a small celebration and a kiss, it quickly transitions into one of the goriest gameplay trailers we’ve seen at E3. From brutally carving an enemy’s neck to watching somebody get gutted and hanged, the shock factor is definitely there.
There’s much more than that in the trailer though; it gives us a good look at how the environment has changed since the first game, and also gives us a solid look at combat. The combat looks smooth and natural, with enemies responding to your hits in realistic fashion. The environment seems to react correctly too, with items falling off shelving units when hit or with tall grass gently blowing in the wind.
Essentially, it has got us very excited about TLOU2, and we recommend that you watch the trailers below.
