This year’s nominations for the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards are in and it’s The Irishman leading the way this time round, after landing itself 14 nods.

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman is a new Netflix mob movie that stars the likes of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

The movie is based on the book, I Heard You Paint Houses, and follows the story of Frank Sheehan – dubbed the Irishman and played by De Niro – as he recounts his life as a hitman and his encounters with union official Jimmy Hoffa and the Bufalino crime family.

It’s a whopping 3.5 hours long and reportedly cost $160million to make, but it looks like that’s been money well spent as The Irishman has dominated the nominations for Critics’ Choice.

It’s up for 14 awards out of a possible 23 categories, with De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci all receiving acting nominations. De Niro is up for Best Actor, while Al Pacino and Pesci are up for Best Supporting Actor.

Scorsese has been listed in the Best Director category and The Irishman will also battle it out for Best Picture.

It faces stiff competition, though, especially from Quentin Tarantino’s latest release, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, which landed 12 nominations.

Other stars hoping to scoop a gong on the night include Jennifer Lopez for her work in stripper flick Hustlers, Scarlett Johansson for her roles in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, and Margot Robbie for new movie Bombshell.

Joaquin Phoenix will battle it out in the Best Actor category for his controversial role in Joker and will take on the likes of De Niro, DiCaprio, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Adam Driver and Antonio Banderas

The Critics’ Choice Awards honours achievements in both film and television, with Netflix coming out on top in the nominations reveal, after landing 30 nods for film and a massive 61 nods for TV.

The awards are voted for by members of the Critics Choice Association and the winners will be revealed when the ceremony takes place on Sunday 12 January in Santa Monica.
