The Hydro in Glasgow named world's second busiest concert venue behind MSG in New York

It’s the go-to location for all the superstar acts coming to perform in Glasgow nowadays and the SSE Hydro’s success has now been recognised on a global scale after it was named the world’s second busiest concert venue.

The 13,000 capacity venue was recognised by Pollstar, the trade publication for the concert industry, in their end of year list highlighting the world’s top arena venues.

Between 22 November 2018 and 20 November 2019 The Hydro sold over a million tickets, grossing over £55.5million in sales.

The likes of Still Game’s sold-out live shows as well gigs by Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney helped pack in the crowds at the venue.

And The Hydro was only placed behind New York’s Madison Square Garden, which grossed over $200million and sold more than 1,500,000 tickets over course of the year.

But the Hydro’s figures are still hugely impressive. The Glasgow venue sold 300,000 more tickets than London’s O2 Arena and made over £10million more in sales over the same period.

And there’s quite a gap between The Hydro and Cologne’s Lanxess Arena, which is third on the list, with the Glasgow Arena selling 25,000 more tickets over the year than the German venue.

In a separate list of the world’s busiest club venues for 2019, Glasgow’s O2 Academy is listed at number 14, with SWG3 and King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut also named in the top 100.
