The humble white vest top is back

A classic white t-shirt is considered the centre piece of any great capsule wardrobe. Invest in a good quality tee and it’s an enduring item that will never go out of style.

But, that could all be about to change for summer 2019.

Usually hidden away and used simply as an extra layer, the humble vest top is expected to have a starring role in our OOTDs in the coming months.

We’re not talking about the spaghetti strap styles with luxe satin finishes or bright sassy slogans, we’re talking about your bog-standard, white, ribbed vest.

It was first adopted as an off-duty model staple during Milan Fashion Week spring/summer 2019, when Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid showed its understated excellence in multiple ways. Kendall tucked a tight fitted vest into black jeans, a look that has since been recreated by the likes of Hailey Bieber, Kourtney Kardashian and Lucy Hale to create a casual, androgynous look.

Bella Hadid then opted for a more DIY approach, cutting off the bottom half to create a crop top and pairing it with ’90s tinted sunglasses and small shoulder bag.

Now, as we enter summer, our feeds have become filled with vest top outfit inspiration.

To nail the look yourself, either dress up a simple vest by adding a blazer and strappy sandals, or create the perfect holiday look by tucking it into a denim skirt or cycling shorts.

In excellent news for your bank balance, a ribbed racer vest can be picked up for as little as £9 at Topshop. If you’d rather invest in a quality basic, several designers have put their spin on the minimalistic separate. Our top picks are Miu Miu’s basic tank ( £145) or Helmut Lang’s scroop neck (£110).
